Overseas Study Program

Perth,  Australia

Everything about the States seems weird when you come back, from the money we use to the way we say things. ”

Cara Zimmerman

Cara’s major: Telecommunications

Year/Term Abroad: Spring 2011

Reason You Chose this Program:  Australia is an English speaking country, and Perth is on the coast of the Indian Ocean.  The university I was at was within ten minutes of downtown, and within 15 minutes of the ocean.

Favorite Classes:  Screen Cultures/Print Cultures (an English class), and Ethics, Free Will, and Meaning (a philosophy class).

Describe the Housing Situation:  I lived in St. Thomas More College with about 180 other students, mostly Aussies.  It was across the road from the university.  We all had single rooms and all the bedding was provided.  It was a great community.

Best Memory:  Taking a bus tour up the West coast.  Australia has incredible scenery!  And since it was a bus tour we didn’t really have to worry about planning anything ourselves, which was nice.

Experience with culture shock or reverse culture shock:  The reverse culture shock is definitely worse.  Everything about the States seems weird when you come back, from the money we use to the way we say things.

Complete this sentence: If I could do it over, I would…go for an entire year.  Or just move there altogether.  And I’d travel a lot more within Australia.
