Education Abroad at IUB ranks among the best in the nation

Indiana University Bloomington ranks 6th nationwide among more than 1,000 U.S. universities in overall number of students studying abroad, according to the latest Open Doors report released by the Institute of International Education. IUB has ranked each year in the top 20 for more than two decades for the total number of students going abroad.

According to Kathleen Sideli, Associate Vice President for Education Abroad at Indiana University, the Open Doors figures only partially account for the full profile of IUB student mobility since the published total of 2,839 includes only U.S. students earning credit abroad. 300 IUB international students also pursued study in a country other than their country of origin In 2016-17.  And an additional 745 U.S. and international students took part in non-credit educational programs which included volunteer service, internships and research.

IU is strongly ranked nationally across two duration periods -- #3 for semester students, #12 for summer/short-term programs and #18 for long term programs-- which indicates a balanced distribution of students across programs of different lengths while the national trend has students participating in shorter programs.

The Institute of International Education, the leading not-for-profit educational and cultural exchange organization in the United States, has conducted an annual statistical survey of campuses regarding international students in the United States since 1919, and with support from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs since the early 1970s.
