- Semester Program with IES Abroad
- IES Center is located in the heart of downtown Barcelona, near Plaza Catalunya
- Typical enrollment: 500-900 students from U.S. colleges and universities
- Program Dates
Note: Students enrolled in partner university courses are required to complete university exams on the official exam date and vacate IES Abroad housing one day after their last final exam. Final exam dates will vary by partner university.
- Academic Program
- IES Abroad "Arts & Culture" "Journalism & Communications" "Liberal Arts & Business" or "Political Science & International Relations" program*
- Orientation and intensive Spanish
- 50 courses in language, humanities, social sciences, and business taught in English for IES Abroad students only
- Required enrollment at local institutions (access based on language exam)
- Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB) courses in English or Spanish, including Business, Economics, Politcal Science, and Humanities (minimum enrollment of two courses).
- Universitat de Barcelona (UB) courses in English and Spanish, including Art History, Cultural Studies, History and Literature.
- Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) courses in English and Spanish, including Business Management and Finance, Political Science, Humanities, Cinema Communication, and Media (minimum enrollment of two courses).
- Universitat Ramon Llull (URL) courses in English and Spanish, including Tourism, Business, Finance, and Management.
- Universitat de Vic (UVic) courses in English, including Business, Design, and Innovation.
- Optional, unpaid 3-credit internship
- 8-10 hours per week, 100 total hours
- Placements in business, education, health, non-profits, start-ups, media & communication, event management, and social agencies
Course Load
- Program requires enrollment in Spanish language course and combination of IES Abroad center courses AND either a university course or internship
- 15 IU credits in a combination of IES Abroad courses and university courses
- Optional 3-credit unpaid internship

- Program Eligibility
You may apply if you:
- are an undergraduate student at any Indiana University campus who is making normal academic progress
- are in at least your fourth full-time semester of college
- have taken or are enrolled in first semester college-level Spanish with a B average
- have approximately a 2.75 cumulative GPA
*Business majors who have completed more than four semesters of Spanish should consider other options, and review information and eligibility criteria for other programs in Barcelona and Seville. Those who have completed five semesters of Spanish (S280 at IUB) are not eligible for IES Barcelona. Please see a Kelley Study Abroad Advisor for more information.
*All students who have completed five semesters of Spanish or more, or who are working toward a minor/major in Spanish, are not eligible for IES Barcelona and should review information and eligibility criteria for other programs appropriate for their Spanish language level.
Business majors must have (or will have) successfully completed the KSB prerequisites of the Business Integrative Core (or equivalent coursework at an IU campus outside Bloomington) by the start of the program
Students must have a passport valid for six months beyond program's end date.
Students must be able to demonstrate flexibility, resilience, and self-reliance.
Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria are outlined within the Academic Policies and Procedures of the Office of Overseas Study. Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant. Students on disciplinary probation during program period are ineligible.
