Shanghai is a huge city of more than 24 million people and serves as mainland China’s commercial and financial epicenter. The Business, Language, and Culture co-sponsored program places participants in center-based, English-speaking classrooms with other students from U.S. institutions. Students will take Mandarin language coursework and also have the option of participating in a business internship experience.

- Program Organization
- This is an IU Co-Sponsored Program
- Semester Business Program at the Council on International Education Exchange (CIEE) Study Center at East China Normal University
- Typical enrollment: 80 students from U.S. colleges and universities
- Academic Program
- "Business, Language, and Culture" program track*
- Take business courses taught in English at the CIEE Study Center at East China Normal University
- Gain firsthand knowledge about business in China through excursions and company visits
- Develop competency in Mandarin through beginning to advanced level courses, peer tutoring, and language clinics
- Optional, unpaid 3-credit internship (requires at least two semesters of Mandarin)
- 8-10 hours/week (45-60 per semester)
- This program does not include a language intensive component; IU students will be awarded undistributed credit for the language course(s) and would need to take an IU placement exam upon completion of the program in order to determine the next appropriate language course at IU.
- This program will satisfy the IUB Gen Ed World Language and Culture Requirement
This program is restricted to students admitted to the IU Bloomington Kelley School of Business.
Course Load
- 15 IU credit hours
- Required Chinese language course (6 credits or 3 credits)
- Required Business core course, Changing Nature of Business in China (3 credits)
- Required Business elective (3 credits)
- Business or general elective or internship (3-6 credits)
- Please note: Independent study is not an option for IU students on this program. Students cannot earn credit for independent study on the Shanghai CIEE program.

You may apply if you:
- are an undergraduate student at any Indiana University campus who is making normal academic progress
- are in at least your fourth full-time semester of college
- are an admitted Kelley business student or an admitted Liberal Arts and Management Program (LAMP) student
- have approximately a 3.0 cumulative GPA
Note: Students who are citizens of the People's Republic of China (PRC), Taiwan ROC, Hong Kong SAR, or Macau SAR are welcome to apply to this program. Please work with your Kelley Study Abroad Advisor and the CIEE Study Abroad Advisor to discuss special entry requirements.
Business majors must have completed (or will complete) the KSB prerequisites of the Business Integrative Core (or equivalent coursework at an IU campus outside Bloomington) by the start of the program.
Liberal Arts and Management Program (LAMP) students must have completed BUS K201 and ECON E201 and E202.
Students must be able to demonstrate flexibility, resilience, and self-reliance.
Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria are outlined within the Academic Policies and Procedures of the Office of Overseas Study. Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant. Students on disciplinary probation during program period are ineligible.
