- Program Organization
The IU Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health is offering a unique one-week international experience that will provide students with an opportunity to learn about healthcare systems around the world, with special emphasis on Nicaragua. Program participants will receive an in-depth introduction to the health system in Nicaragua and have an opportunity to compare and contrast the health systems in Nicaragua and the U.S.
Participants will spend substantial time out in the field visiting the Nicaraguan health facilities, seeing historical and cultural sites, and participating in a service project constructing composting latrines to improve public and environmental health in the rural community of Zacataloza.
- Academic Program
Students will earn 3 credits for this course. Undergraduate students will enroll in PBHL-P450. Graduate students will enroll in PBHL-H670. To view a draft syllabus for the course, see here.
This is an elective course in the School of Public Health. Environmental Health Science students may count the course for minor requirements. They will need to see their advisor about this. Students in majors outside the school who are interested in health and healthcare may also earn elective credit.
All full-time undergraduate students pay a flat tuition rate that covers up to 18 credit hours. If you are and IUPUI student planning to take between 12-15 credits this spring, you can add this study abroad experience at no additional tuition cost. Graduate students will pay for 3 credits of graduate tuition at their resident or non-resident rates.
The available coursework is particularly suited for, but not necessarily limited to, the following academic interests: Public Health/Public Health Administration, Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Health Sciences, Nursing, and Public Affairs and Administration.

- Housing
In Managua, students will stay in a hostel in shared rooms.
In Zacataloza, students will live with host families in simple concrete block homes with dirt floors. Homes do have electricity. Cots and mosquito nets are provided. Participants must bring bedding and towels. There is no running water in Zacataloza. Families get water from a community pump.

You may apply if you:
- are an undergraduate student at any Indiana University campus who is making normal academic progress
Students must be able to demonstrate flexibility, resilience, and self-reliance.
Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria are outlined within the Academic Policies and Procedures of the Office of Overseas Study. Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant. Students on disciplinary probation during program period are ineligible.
