- Program Organization
The IU Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health is offering a unique one-week international experience that will provide students with an opportunity to learn about healthcare systems around the world, with special emphasis on England's National Health System. Program participants will receive an in-depth introduction to this global model for health services delivery and have an opportunity to compare and contrast the health systems in England and the U.S.
In London, students will explore both the past and the future of public health, including the early history of public health, as well as the organization, financing, challenges and future direction of the NHS. Classroom teaching will take place at Winston House at 3 Bedford Square in Bloomsbury, Central London. Participants will spend much of their time out in the field in a variety of activities, including:
- Participate in walking tours led by guides with public health backgrounds who will incorporate their specialized, field-relevant knowledge into the tours. Tours will include discussion about sanitation and early epidemics in Victorian London, as well as a visit to the John Snow pub and the Broad Street pump, site of the famous cholera outbreak.
- Visit London-area health facilities, historical sites, museums and other cultural sites directly related to health and health systems
- Meet with local health experts, including faculty from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and King’s College London
- Take part in a fun public health scavenger hunt in the heart of London
There’s also time built in for students to explore London’s landmarks, museums, shops and restaurants on their own.

- Academic Program
Students will earn 1 credit for this course. Undergraduate students will enroll in PBHL-P450. Graduate students will enroll in PBHL-H670.
This is an elective course in the School of Public Health. Students in majors outside the school who are interested in health and healthcare may also earn elective credit.All full-time undergraduate students pay a flat tuition rate that covers up to 18 credit hours. If you are an IUPUI student planning to take between 12-15 credits this spring, you can add this study abroad experience at no additional tuition cost. Graduate students will pay graduate tuition at their resident or non-resident rates.

- HousingStudents will stay at Acorn Apartments in Bloomsbury, close to the British Museum, British Library and the University of London.
- Program Eligibility
You may apply if you:
- are an undergraduate student at any Indiana University campus who is making normal academic progress
- Preference will be given to applicants from IUPUI but students from other IU campuses are welcomed.
- Graduate students from the Fairbanks School of Public Health may also attend, and supplemental coursework is assigned.
- This program is designed for junior or senior undergraduate students who are interested in health and healthcare at an international level, but students of all majors are welcome to apply.

- have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA
Students must be able to demonstrate flexibility, resilience, and self-reliance.
Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria are outlined within the Academic Policies and Procedures of the Office of Overseas Study. Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant. Students on disciplinary probation during program period are ineligible.
