Located on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, Barcelona is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city. The co-sponsored Language and Area Studies summer program offers several center-based culture and Spanish courses for students from U.S. universities. Students enroll in courses based on their level of Spanish fluency.

- Students with 2 or 3 semesters of Spanish:
- Intermediate Spanish Language (4 credits) HISP-S 200 or HISP-S 250 (pending placement)
- Spanish Language in Context: Novice Abroad III (HISP-S 200)
- Spanish Language in Context: Emerging Independent Abroad I (HISP-S 250)
- One Area Studies course in English, 3 credits
- Sports and Society in Spain (SOC-OS 300* or SPH-M 304**)
- Great Twentieth Century Artists of Catalonia: Picasso, Dali, and Miro (ARTH-OS 100* or COLL-OS 103-Gen Ed A&H)
- Barcelona: The Cosmopolitan City (HIST-B 200, CASE S&H or Gen Ed S&H)
- International Marketing: A European Approach (BUS-OS 100*)
- Intermediate Spanish Language (4 credits) HISP-S 200 or HISP-S 250 (pending placement)

- Note: -OS 100 (-OS 300) is the default designation to identify overseas study courses recorded as 100-level (300-level) undistributed credit that can count in total hours toward graduation and may be able to satisfy major, minor, or distributional requirements with the approval of participant's school or the department.

- Housing
- Placements primarily in Spanish homes and to lesser extent student apartments. See IES Abroad program information here (select "Daily Life" tab).
- Indiana University will not support plans for students to obtain independent housing.
- Program Eligibility
You may apply if you:
- are an undergraduate student at any Indiana University campus who is making normal academic progress
- are in at least your second full-time semester of college
- have taken or are enrolled in second semester college-level Spanish
- have approximately a 2.75 cumulative GPA
Students must have a passport valid for six months beyond program's end date.
Students must be able to demonstrate flexibility, resilience, and self-reliance.
Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria are outlined within the Academic Policies and Procedures of the Office of Overseas Study. Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant. Students on disciplinary probation during program period are ineligible.

- IES Abroad portion of fee paid to IU bursar: $6,640 (academic fees, housing, orientation, health insurance)
- Meals: $700 - $1,350
- International airfare: $570 - $935
