• Summer Program with College Year in Athens (CYA)
• Typical enrollment: 15-20 students from U.S. colleges and universities in each course

CYA summer courses (4 credits each) are offered in two consecutive 4-week sessions that run between late May and late July. IU students can participate in either session or both sessions. See additional course informaton.

Course Load

Session I (May 29 - June 24, 2023):

• The Strangeness of Ancient Greece: Diversity, Difference and Regionality among the Greek States (Athens, Peloponnese)
• When Egypt meets the Aegean: Interconnections in the Bronze Age Eastern Mediterranean (Thera [Santorini], Crete, Athens)
• "Islomania": An Exploration of Contemporary Art in the Greek Islands
• Plague, Politics & Populism - Classical Athens as Parable for Modern Greece and Europe (Athens, Delphi, Delos, Mykonos)
• Health and Healing in the Ancient Greek World (Athens, Kos)
• Becoming a Traveler: Writing in Greece (Athens, Poros, Nauplion)
• The Geography of Faith: Paul and the Emergence of Christianity in Greece (Athens, Corinth, Philippi, Thessaloniki)

Session II (June 26 - July 22, 2023): 

• Excavating in the Aegean: The Despotiko Field School (Paros, Antiparos)
• Plundering Greek Antiquity: Collectors, Museums, and Archaeological Ethics (Naxos, Crete, Thessaloniki)
• Wind Energy Fundamentals
• Making Love and War in the Medieval Mediterranean: Cross-Cultural Encounters in the Middle and Late Byzantine Periods
• Reason & Revelation: Paganism and Christianity
• Cultural Considerations in Understanding Family Dynamics
• Greek Island Architecture, Culture, and Identity (Naxos, Amorgos, Santorini, Tinos)

You may apply if you:

• are an undergraduate student at any Indiana University campus who is making normal academic progress
• are in at least your second full-time semester of college
• have approximately a 2.75 cumulative GPA

Note: CYA summer courses are physically demanding. As a student enrolled in CYA summer courses, you will probably walk much more than you do normally and you may experience many new physical demands in your daily routine. Please prepare accordingly.

Students must have a passport valid for six months beyond program's end date.

Students must be able to demonstrate flexibility, resilience, and self-reliance.

Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria are outlined within the Academic Policies and Procedures of the Office of Overseas Study. Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant. Students on disciplinary probation during program period are ineligible.

Financial Aid and Scholarships:

• Most IU scholarships, grants and loans applicable to program costs, only if you are enrolled in 6 credits in IU summer sessions.
